Adding upvotes to a new comment on a new thread

This guide covers adding upvotes to a comment posted on a new Reddit thread.
Thread age matters a lot. Reddit is much more tolerant of fast engagement on very fresh threads, but that tolerance drops quickly as time passes.
The 72-hour rule
Threads less than 72 hours old
Rapid upvotes are generally fine. Reddit expects early engagement on fresh discussions, so adding upvotes shortly after commenting looks natural.
Threads older than 72 hours
You should already start slowing things down. At this point, adding too many upvotes too quickly can look unnatural and increase the risk of flags or removals.
Once a thread passes a few days, treat it closer to an older thread and use a slower delivery strategy.
What upvotes do for comments on new threads
Upvotes help your comment:
Rank higher inside the comment section
Get seen earlier by other users
Receive organic replies
On new threads, early upvotes help establish position before the thread becomes crowded.
Recommended approach
For threads under 72 hours old, fast or bulk upvotes are acceptable
After 72 hours, slow down delivery
If a thread is several weeks old, follow the old-thread strategy instead
If youβre unsure which strategy to use, default to the slower option.
Final note
There is no official Reddit rule defining when a thread stops being βnew.β The 72-hour window is based on testing and real usage. Always consider how active the subreddit is.
